GAMUDA Bhd, in partnership with Ferrovial through the Gamuda-Ferrovial Joint Venture (GFJV), has signed an early contractor involvement (ECI) agreement with Capricornia Energy Hub (CEH) to develop a pumped hydroelectric storage system (PHES) in Central Queensland.
The ECI phase, which will last five months, aims to finalise an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the project.
Located 80km west of Mackay, the 750 MW system will provide reliable and affordable energy to about 900,000 homes.
The project features a 12 GWh storage capacity and will include an upper off-stream reservoir and a lower reservoir near the Eungella dam.
The project is set to begin construction in 2026, creating 600 jobs during peak construction and 65 permanent jobs during operations.
The initiative is a key part of Queensland’s renewable energy future. — TMR
