MALAYSIA is planning the implementation of a single tourist visa as one of its agenda in its ASEAN’s chairmanship.
Utusan Malaysia reported that Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (picture) stated this aligns with the concept of integration and unity emphasised in this year’s theme, which envisions all member countries working together to boost economic growth collectively.
“Many people visit Malaysia and then want to go to Singapore or Thailand, or they come to Malaysia from Thailand.
“But there are several restrictions, mostly related to administrative issues.
“We need to address this matter collectively to ensure that tourists entering Malaysia can travel freely to other ASEAN countries without restrictions,” he said as reported by the Malay daily.
Mohamad stated that early discussions included the idea of border checks similar to the Schengen Visa concept implemented in the European Union (EU).
The Schengen Visa allows tourists to travel freely within 22 EU countries without needing an individual visa for each country.
Meanwhile, Mohamad also hoped for a more stable and peaceful world under the leadership of US President Donald Trump.
He added that ASEAN recognises Trump’s leadership as capable of contributing significantly to creating a more harmonious global environment.
“ASEAN hopes that under Trump’s leadership, the world will become more stable and peaceful while appreciating the efforts to strengthen international relations,” he said.
Mohamad also informed that ASEAN foreign ministers welcomed the implementation of a ceasefire and agreements on the release of hostages and detainees in Gaza.
He said the plan provides an opportunity to ease tensions and prioritise the lives of innocent civilians, even though the situation in Gaza remains precarious. — TMR
