14 Malaysian students affected by LA’s Palisades fire

By AUFA MARDHIAH

THE Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) has confirmed that 14 Malaysian students from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have been affected by the state of emergency declared in Los Angeles.

The emergency, declared by Mayor Karen Bass, was caused by the Palisades Fire and Windstorm, with US President Joe Biden approving aid through a Fire Management Assistance Grant.

MOHE in a statement on Jan 12 said the Education Malaysia Los Angeles (EMLA) office is also actively monitoring the situation and has implemented a student tracking system.

“To date, the 14 affected students are located near the disaster area but remain in good condition,” it said.

Additionally, no evacuation orders have been issued by UCLA, but MOHE and the Consul General’s office in Los Angeles are prepared to provide shelter and assistance if necessary.

MOHE urges Malaysian students to update their details through the MyData@EducationMalaysia4U system to ensure accurate and up-to-date information in case of emergencies.

For assistance, students are advised to contact the Education Malaysia Los Angeles office at +1 (626) 879-4923 or via email at [email protected]

The ministry will continue to provide updates as necessary.
