Govt considers cost structure for foreign worker recruitment in Sabah

THE Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) is evaluating a structured cost system for recruiting foreign workers in Sabah to address the financial burden on employers.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad said consultations are underway with source countries to determine a transparent cost structure.

“In regards to the establishment of recruitment costs for foreign workers, including in Sabah and Sarawak, Kesuma is in the process of holding consultation sessions with source countries to detail the cost structure for recruiting foreign workers who will be employed in Malaysia,” he said in Parliament today.

He added that once finalised, these findings will be shared with all stakeholders, including relevant government agencies, employers, trade unions and private employment agencies in Sabah and Sarawak.

Currently, foreign worker recruitment costs have become a significant expense for employers in Sabah.

In addition to the cost structure, Kesuma is set to implement a pre-employment concept to provide potential foreign workers with a clear understanding of job requirements and costs associated with employment in Malaysia.

“For prospective foreign workers, the ministry will also implement a pre-employment concept, providing early exposure to the types of jobs and the associated costs involved in Malaysia”” Abdul Rahman said.

The ministry is also encouraging employers to reduce reliance on foreign workers by transitioning to mechanisation or automation.
