Ministry still evaluating mechanism for subsidised petrol purchase

THE Economy Ministry is still assessing the best way for Malaysians to access subsidised RON95 petrol.

Its minister Rafizi Ramli said the proposed system would introduce a two-tier pricing model at petrol stations, where 85% of Malaysians would continue purchasing petrol at a subsidised rate, while the top 15% of income earners and foreigners would pay a floating price.

“This will complement the government’s effort to target subsidies away from those not eligible for RON95 subsidies, namely foreigners and the top 15% highest-income households, to those in need, namely the other 85% of the population,” he said in Parliament today.

Eligibility for subsidies would be determined based on household socioeconomic status, including factors like net income, family size and regional living costs.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia has established district-specific thresholds through the Basic Living Income Expenditure index to ensure subsidies support families according to their living expenses.

Verification at petrol stations is expected to use methods such as MyKad ID or e-wallets, with the Finance Ministry (MOF) overseeing the development of this pricing and verification system.

With a rollout expected by mid-2025, the Economy Ministry and MOF are currently refining the system to ensure a seamless implementation, addressing potential issues with infrastructure, internet connectivity and verification processes.
