THE National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage or Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (Aswara) celebrates 30 years of fostering Malaysia’s cultural landscape by staging “Sakti Merong Mahawangsa,” an epic tale that mirrors its own journey of resilience and growth.
Set to run from Nov 22-24 at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLpac), this musical brings the ancient legend of Merong Mahawangsa to life with contributions from over 100 alumni — each a testament to Aswara’s mission to cultivate Malaysia’s artistic legacy.
Through this grand production, Aswara honours its past while envisioning a future rich in creativity and heritage.
The performance, presented in collaboration with the Aswara Alumni Association, promises a dynamic retelling of the legendary journey of “Merong Mahawangsa” in establishing Kedah Zamin Turan, now known as Kedah.
Aswara Alumni Association president Tengku Iefizulasyrifie Putra Tengku Alaudin described the musical as the highlight of Aswara’s Pearl Jubilee celebration.
“The unity and passion each of our members brings to this production is a testament to the bond we share as artists. We hope to further enliven the artistic legacy the academy has built, inspiring new generations to appreciate the beauty and depth of Malaysian culture,” he told The Malaysian Reserve (TMR).
The decision to adapt “Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa” is deeply meaningful. This epic tale reflects the resilience and courage Aswara has championed since its founding in 1994.
Aswara’s Rector Dr Tan Awang Besar said that the story of “Merong Mahawangsa” mirrors its own journey.
“It’s about resilience, overcoming challenges and loyalty to heritage — all values that guide us in empowering Malaysia’s cultural legacy.”
The event is further enriched by a Gala Night and Ekspresi Merong-Alumni Homecoming, drawing together the Aswara community to celebrate its 30-year journey.
Massive Collaborative Effort
Bringing this production to life required extensive coordination among Aswara’s alumni and creative teams.
Directed by Mohd Sharul Mizad Asari, “Sakti Merong Mahawangsa” faced unique challenges, including a short three-month timeframe to gather alumni, develop the script and prepare for the performance.
“It has been an extremely challenging process. But working under pressure often sparks creativity, and the support from everyone involved has made it possible to meet each challenge head-on,” Mohd Sharul admitted.
The musical features a range of talents from diverse disciplines, with roles filled through rigorous auditions that assess singing, acting and dancing skills.
Key cast members include A Aris Kadir as Merong Mahawangsa, a seasoned actor returning to the stage after a 15-year break and Fiza Thomas, an alumna celebrated for her recent role in “Ola Bola The Musical”.
Recalling the emotional journey of rehearsals, Aris confessed that returning to the stage brought back a rush of excitement and nostalgia.
“I didn’t expect to be chosen for the lead; I simply wanted to reconnect with performing. But the experience has been both humbling and exhilarating.”
The production team includes notable alumni from various creative fields, showcasing the interdisciplinary strength of Aswara’s network.
Since its inception, Aswara has evolved to offer an inclusive arts education that spans theatre, film, animation and more.
The institution plans to further expand its influence by welcoming international students and diversifying its curriculum to include modern disciplines like animation and digital media.
Tengku Iefizulasyrifie expressed a vision for the alumni network to play a greater role in Aswara’s future.
“This production is more than a performance; it’s a symbol of our shared heritage and an invitation for alumni to contribute back to Aswara and Malaysian arts.”
With online ticket sales now open, Aswara invites audiences to experience this grand production, celebrating both the institution’s legacy and Malaysia’s cultural treasures.
