THE Ministry of Education (MOE) should carry out mental health screenings for prospective teachers to help identify and address potential issues, including those related to sexual misconduct.
This is to ensure the ministry will only appoint qualified teachers who are in good mental health conditions for better quality education for the new generation.
In a report by Utusan Malaysia, National Union of Teachers of Peninsular Malaysia (NUTP) secretary general Fouzi Singon (picture) suggested that the MOE introduce these screenings to prevent teachers from getting involved in sexual crimes, which are often associated with mental and psychological issues.
“Even if the students are being provocative, sexual misconduct will not happen if the teachers control themselves and keep a professional distance between them.
“That’s why I emphasise the need for an integration plan between the MOE and the Ministry of Health (MOH) for us to carry out this mental health screening for all prospective teachers,” he told the Malay daily.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also warned that underperforming teachers will not receive automatic grade promotions under the time-based system.
The government acknowledges the principle of time-based promotion, but not all educators, particularly teachers, can fully benefit from this approach.
