Icon Offshore Bhd said that an explosion occurred on one of its platform supply vessels (PSVs) off the coast of Sarawak, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and serious injuries to a third.
The incident happened on August 2, 2024, at approximately 10:30 pm at the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu, involving the vessel Icon Amara.
Icon’s board of directors expressed deep regret and sadness over the fatalities and injury.
It said that an emergency response team was promptly deployed to support the affected crew and their families.
The company extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathy to the injured.
Icon said an investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway, with the company fully cooperating with the relevant authorities.
The vessel and its crew are fully insured, and Icon expects the vessel to resume active duty once the investigation is completed.
The company noted that there was a delay in disclosing details about the incident as it worked with its client and authorities to ensure the accuracy of the information.
Icon clarified that the incident is not anticipated to materially affect its overall operations or financial performance.
The company remains committed to personnel safety and is taking steps to prevent future incidents.
Icon’s shares fell by 3 sen, or 2.91%, closing at RM1, with the company’s market capitalisation at RM622.56 million. –TMR
