PRASARANA Malaysia Bhd has donated two decommissioned light rail transit (LRT) coaches to be submerged off the coast of Pulau Tioman as the first LRT artificial reef in Malaysia.
This initiative would support marine biodiversity and promote tourism on Tioman Island.
The project aligns with the “United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water”, contributing to global conservation efforts beyond Prasarana’s 2023-2030 Sustainability Action Plan, launched in December 2023.
This corporate social responsibility initiative was carried out in collaboration with Yayasan Al-Sultan Abdullah and was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).
The donated LRT coaches were among the first used on the Kelana Jaya Line since 1998 and have been out of service since October 2023.
They were transported from the Kelana Jaya Depot to Sinar Tioman in Kuala Rompin, with technical support from the Rapid Rail’s team.
The MBOR launch event for “The First LRT Coach Reef in Malaysia” was officiated by the Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Berjaya Tioman Resort.
The submersion of the LRT coaches, 18m deep at the Al-Sultan Abdullah Dive Site at Pulau Tioman, was carried out by 60 professional divers led by Brigadier General Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah.
