THE government ensures that freedom of speech, as enshrined in the constitution, remains protected.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil (picture) expressed the government’s commitment to safeguarding freedom of speech while addressing recent incidents of cyberbullying to prevent their recurrence.
“We have engaged with the community, and unfortunately, cyberbullying is widespread, affecting many across various platforms.
“Offenders often use fake accounts for their misconduct. I have observed cases where influencers have disclosed sensitive information, and the perpetrators use these fake accounts for cyberbullying,” he said in a press conference after launching the CelcomDigi Experience Centre on Tuesday.
He also noted the uncertainty surrounding the number of individuals silently suffering.
“Even two journalists were cyberbullied, with their addresses leaked by perpetrators using fake accounts,” he said.
Fahmi stressed the importance of condemning various actions, including sexual assault, and drawing clear boundaries.
“I have instructed the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to monitor individuals using offensive language or making unlawful comments,” he said.
On Monday, Fahmi announced that his ministry would review current laws on cyberbullying and ensure those responsible for an influencer’s death face justice.
On July 5, beauty content creator Rajeswary Appahu, 30, known as Esha on social media, was found dead in her home.
A day earlier, she had lodged a police report at the Dang Wangi police station expressing her fears of being raped and killed.
She had reportedly named two individuals who had allegedly tormented her on TikTok. She also claimed that an individual had harassed her in a “live session” with the use of threats and vulgarity.
Highlighting the necessity for legal amendments, Fahmi stressed broader offences beyond personal data breaches and announced plans for a meeting to strategise next steps.
He pledged ministry actions to enhance internet safety across platforms.
