NATIONAL carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd marked a significant milestone in its 41-year history on June 18 by surpassing the production of five million units, with its Proton X90 Flagship model.

The model was unveiled during a visit to the company’s headquarters at the Centre of Excellence complex by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology Jin Zhuanglong.

The visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Malaysia, officially celebrated on May 31.

Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong said Proton was tasked with mobilising Malaysians and establishing a local automotive ecosystem when it was formed in 1983, it continues to play a critical role in the nation’s economy.

“Over 100,000 people earn a living through activities linked to Proton and each of them played a role in driving the company towards this landmark achievement of five million units,” he said in a statement.

Since beginning its collaboration with the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd in 2017, Proton has launched four new models jointly developed with its shareholder, upgraded its locally designed models and introduced intelligence and connectivity to its entire lineup.

These advancements, along with improvements in product quality, investments in after-sales and parts management and the establishment of a dealer network with the highest number of 3S/4S outlets, have resulted in five consecutive years of sales growth and increased production.

The group added that since the introduction of the Proton X70 on Dec 12, 2018, more than 217,000 units of the company’s X-series SUVs have been sold to local and export market customers, making Proton the overall leader in SUV sales in Malaysia during this period.

Sales of the Proton Saga have surpassed two million units, maintaining its position as the most popular Malaysian-made car of all time.

Li said the production of the five millionth unit of Proton X90 Flagship represents Proton’s advancements since partnering with Geely.

“Just last week, we confirmed e.MAS as the brand name for future Proton EV products, and today, as we set yet another milestone, the future is ripe with opportunities for Proton to continue providing sustainable mobility for Malaysians and our export markets,” he added.

The event was attended by Selangor state Executive Committee member for Investment, Trade and Mobility Ng Sze Han; Zhejiang Geely Holding Group chairman Eric Li Shufu, DRB-Hicom Group MD Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Geely International Holdings (M) Sdn Bhd CEO Dr Wei Mei, and Proton Deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah.
