THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to help micro, small and medium enterprises adopt and implement the use of 5G networks for their businesses

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil (picture) said the MoU would be signed within a week or two from now as 5G has reached 80% of coverage in populated areas.

“We hope that after this period, the equity holdings in DNB by telecommunications companies will be completed and finalised.

“One of the conditions imposed on telco companies that wish to be involved in the second network is that they must complete this share subscription agreement (SSA) for equity holdings in DNB.

“In terms of user adoption, the usage rate for the 5G network has reached 39.2%. This shows an increase of 3.8% compared to the end of March this year,” ,” he told a press conference at Putrajaya today.

Fahmi remarked that, there are a total of 13.2 million 5G accounts and 422,609 enterprise accounts indicating the positive achievement  of the coverage is well received by the public.

This is after the decision by the current government who in Aug last year said the 5G network will start to shift from a single network to dual network.

“With the rising coverage and satisfactory user adoption, the next step is for telecom companies to complete their share subscription agreement for equity in Digital National Berhad (DNB),” Fahmi said.

He added that the first board of directors meeting for DNB was held yesterday, with each of the five telco companies represented by a board member and have been given 20 days to make several decisions.

“We hope that after this period, the equity holdings in DNB by telecommunications companies will be completed and finalised,”

“One of the conditions imposed on telco companies that wish to be involved in the second network is that they must complete this share subscription agreement (SSA) for equity holdings in DNB,” he said

Fahmi also noted that MCMC will announce the tender process for the second network, and only companies that have completed the share subscription agreement (SSA) can submit bid for the dual network structure.
