Fahmi asked Dr Mahathir to stop making unnecessary statements

COMMUNICATIONS Minister Fahmi Fadzil asked former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (picture) to stop making unnecessary statements accusing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of not being “elected” by voters.

The government’s spokesperson said Mahathir – who heads the government twice should reflect his “old age” instead.

“Tun lost his deposit in Langkawi while Anwar won in Tambun. (Do some self-reflection) and leave a pristine legacy instead of causing fear or (spinning) such a narrative,” he told reporters after launching the P-Hailing Rahmah Package at Angkasapuri today.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir accused Anwar and the government of intimidating him and others through corruption investigations.

This was after Dr Mahathir’s son Datuk Mirzan Mahathir and closest ally former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin were investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Fahmi denied the matter saying the investigation was done by the anti-graft body who are free to do their investigation without the interference of the government.

“The MACC is free to conduct any investigation it deems appropriate and Anwar has repeatedly said… MACC (is free of government interference).

“If he (Dr Mahathir) thinks the investigation is (motivated by) vengeance, then I think he has made it all up… because as Anwar said before, there is nothing personal about this.

“When it involves the rakyat’s money and property, the (authorities have) the right to examine the matter and it doesn’t apply to an individual or just one group. It applies to all,” he said.

In yesterday’s press conference, Dr Mahathir also said that he is willing to be investigated for alleged corrupt conduct during his tenure as prime minister.

“I disagree when people say it’s not easy to investigate a Tun because I am easy. Anytime you can investigate me. I am prepared to be investigated.

“(They) can look into my accounts, at any bank. Everything (they want), the government can have the access to investigate,” he said. – TMR / pic TMR FILE
