MALAYSIA Airlines and Firefly are offering special fixed fares as low as RM599 for one-way economy flights departing from Kuala Lumpur and Penang to East Malaysia beginning Jan 1, 2024.

This follows the Transport Ministry’s (MoT) announcement in December 2023 that it will subsidise fares during festive periods which include Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Kaamatan and Gawai.

The capped fares apply for travel three days before the festive date to various destinations in Sabah (Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan), Sarawak (Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu), as well as Labuan via Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, and between Penang to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching via Firefly.

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) CCO of airlines Dersenish Aresandiran said the group supports the government in subsidising airfares which allow travellers to reunite with their loved ones at affordable prices.

“In line with this commitment, we will persist in striving to provide a superior travel experience tailored to meet the needs and preferences of our passengers on their journey back home,” he said in a statement.

On the other hand, both airlines are offering a special promotion for the New Year beginning Jan 9 to 22 with fares starting from RM79 for domestic whereas the promotion for international travel is as low as RM219 and is between Jan 9 to Nov 30.

Firefly is offering a promotion starting from RM69 for travel from Jan 9 to June 30 which will be valid on all routes, including Boeing 737-800 aircraft, and offering an additional 10% bonus enrich points.
