PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim (picture) said today that PKR has formally broken off its relationship with Liberal International due to the latter’s backing of Israel in its continuous bombardment on Palestinians in Gaza.
He said the party was once of its “associate” but never a full member of the international society and had decided to sever ties with it in the most recent political bureau meeting of the party.
“LI’s stand on Israel, we brought that in a political bureau meeting, and we (decided to) sever ties with LI.
“Because there are several stands taken by LI, including on recognition of LGBTQs and Israel, we did not become a full member,” Anwar said.
“So, I hope this (issue) will not be politicised,” he told Dewan Rakyat during the Prime Minister Question Time today.
Anwar was responding to the Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) question on the matter.
On Saturday, an official request to Liberal International to take down the party’s name and logo from their website was made by PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi also released a statement last week denying the party had ever been a member of Liberal International.
