Thailand: Pita in 2023 TIME100 Next list

BANGKOK – Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat (picture) has been named in the 2023 TIME100 Next list.

The American news magazine has released its latest list of 100 emerging leaders from around the world who are shaping the future and defining the next generation of leadership.

The 42-year-old Pita was named in the “Leaders” category and is the only Thai that make it to the list this year.

Correspondent at Time Charlie Campbell, in reflecting Pita’s  journey, wrote that the only thing more stunning than Pita’s election victory was the radical agenda he ran to achieve it.

“The Harvard graduate’s upstart Move Forward Party secured 38 per cent of votes in Thailand’s May 14 ballot by promising to bridle the nation’s armed forces and revered royal palace, scrap its controversial royal-defamation law, and end military conscription.

“But the byzantine nature of Thai democracy means Pita’s path to power has been blocked by an unelected Senate and a flurry of legal challenges,” he wrote.

Campbell said Pita may not be Prime Minister, but the reformist movement he leads promises to keep building momentum, especially among young Thais.

“I’m proud of what we have achieved, And we can do a lot more to provide checks and balances in parliament and speak on behalf of the people,” Pita said.

MFP won 151 seats in the general election this year. However, Pita failed to secure enough support from other parties and senators to become prime minister. – BERNAMA
