A&W Malaysia opened its 100th store in Malaysia at Sierra Fresco in Puchong, Selangor, in conjunction with its 60th anniversary.

The new outlet offers a retro-chic American diner-style atmosphere, catering to a younger generation, featuring the first-of-its-kind self-ordering kiosks in Malaysia.

Its CEO George Ang said 40% of transactions are done via credit cards and its own mobile app, in stark contrast to just five years ago when most customers preferred to pay cash.

“Four years ago, when we took over, there was zero delivery. Today 30% of our sales come from delivery,” he said.

In 2021, confectionery and cocoa-based biscuits maker Pan Malaysia Corp Bhd (PMC) entered into a sale and purchase agreement with Inter Mark Resources Sdn Bhd to acquire a 51% stake in A&W (M) Sdn Bhd for RM21.04 million.

Inter Mark was the master developer and exclusive franchisee of the A&W franchise in Malaysia after taking it over from KUB Malaysia Bhd in 2019.

A&W created history when it opened the country’s first fast food restaurant with its maiden outlet at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in 1963.

Moving forward, the company plans to expand its presence in theme parks and strategic rest stops along major highways in the next 12 months. Additionally, A&W will focus on drive-thru outlets to cater to customer trends and demand.

“When we took over, we were only in half the states but today we have opened up in Sabah and Sarawak. We are also going to open in Kangar, the first store in Perlis,” he said.

On its legendary A&W in Petaling Jaya which revolutionised the drive-in offering, Ang said there are plans to replace the outlet which was supposed to be closed down at the end of 2020.
