Citaglobal, Petronas forge strategic partnership for RE techs

CITAGLOBAL Bhd and Petronas Global Technical Solutions Sdn Bhd (PGTSSB) have joined forces in a strategic collaboration that aims to drive the development and implementation of renewable energy (RE) technologies in Malaysia.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during the Energy Asia conference last week, solidifying their commitment to working together in various areas of RE.

Citaglobal’s executive chairman and president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria and PGTSSB’s CEO Annaliz Abu Bakar signed the agreement.

PGTSSB, a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), specialises in providing technology products, technical services, project management and engineering solutions.

The collaboration between Citaglobal and Petronas will focus on various RE technologies and applications, including battery energy storage system (BESS), biogas engines, biomass engineering, waste to energy (WTE), heat to energy (HTE), and carbon capture and utilisation (CCU), among others.

Under the MoU, the parties intend to collaborate on specific areas, namely in the development and implementation of BESS applications and projects will be facilitated by Citaglobal Genetec BESS Sdn Bhd (CG BESS), a joint venture between Citaglobal and Genetec Technology Bhd.

CG BESS has already introduced Malaysia’s first battery energy storage system, MYBESS, which was launched earlier this year.

As part of the collaboration, CG BESS will install a 246 kilowatt-per-hour MYBESS at Petronas’ Centre of Excellence for RE to enhance technology advancement and promote green electron generation.

Additionally, a joint feasibility study will be conducted to explore the scaling up of BESS technology solutions across Petronas’ existing and future facilities.

The collaboration will also involve a joint feasibility study on the use of gas engines for biogas recovery, including flare gas recovery and the utilisation of other gaseous fuels like hydrogen.

Additionally, a joint feasibility study will be conducted to explore the application of WTE and HTE technologies in Petronas plants, as well as to explore CCU initiatives in Petronas plants.

In addition to these areas of collaboration, Citaglobal and Petronas will explore technology advancements in material-based formulations, such as graphene and energy management systems.

Any collaborative activities resulting from the MoU will be detailed in separate definitive agreements, which will be established if the parties mutually agree to implement them.

The MoU is valid from June 27, 2023, and will remain in effect for two years.

Mohamad Norza stated that the importance of consistent and sustainable RE in Malaysia, expressing confidence that the collaboration with Petronas will contribute to achieving lower carbon goals and creating a carbon-neutral world with net-zero emissions by 2050.

“From Citaglobal’s side, we believe that we are in a good position to lead in the BESS space, as we already have the experience and technical know-how. RE and BESS go hand in hand.

“We feel that BESS needs to be an obvious part of the green energy mix in order for renewables to be a reality. Together with Petronas, we are more confident of transitioning towards a greener Malaysia, where the pace of adoption for renewables and BESS become more efficient,” concluded Mohamad Norza. TMR
