Govt sets up high-level committee for sports development

by AFIQ HANIF

THE government has set up a high-level committee to help the development of sports.

This strategic move aims to harness the expertise and resources of multiple ministries towards promoting sports at the highest level.

Recognising the need for comprehensive collaboration beyond the purview of the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasised that other ministries, including the Health Ministry, Education Ministry and Higher Learning Ministry, will also play pivotal roles for a holistic approach.

“By involving various ministries, the government seeks to ensure the integration of essential elements that contribute to the success of sports,” he said during a press conference held today, after chairing the Sports Development Cabinet Committee meeting.

Also present were KBS Minister Hannah Yeoh and Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim.

The committee discussed the coordination and streamlining initiatives and sports development programmes.

Three papers were presented, where the first was on the revision of the membership and terms of reference of the committee; the second on the Malaysian contingent’s performance at Sea Games 2023 in Cambodia and preparations for the next Sea Games; and lastly on the proposal for the establishment of Malaysia Sports Integrity.

Among the sports that the committee will focus on include combat sports, athletics and swimming.

“These disciplines have been identified as areas with great potential to excel on the global stage, and the government aims to provide comprehensive support for athletes aspiring to achieve greatness in these fields.

“The committee will also unearth talent among the military and law enforcement personnel through the Defence Ministry and Home Ministry,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid said, in addition to the collaborative efforts across ministries, the government has pledged to review tax incentives for corporations and individuals who sponsor sports programmes.

“Recognising the vital role played by sponsors in the development of sporting talents, the government will provide a favourable environment that encourages the private sector’s involvement and investment in sports.

“By enhancing tax incentives, we seek to attract more sponsors, thus fostering an ecosystem that nurtures and rewards sporting excellence,” he added.
