Tengku Zafrul is Selangor Umno treasurer

Others appointed include Abdul Mutalif as state liaison secretary and Mohd Zaidi as the state information chief

INVESTMENT, Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (picture) has been appointed as Selangor Umno treasurer following the state leadership meeting yesterday.

On the eve of the state election, the new Umno state line-up led by Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin had also appointed Datuk Abdul Mutalif Abdul Rahim as the state Umno liaison secretary and Datuk Dr Mohd Zaidi Md Zain as the state Umno information head.

In a statement from Umno Selangor, the meeting insisted their commitment in supporting the Unity Government and ensuring the integrity of cooperation in the government for the sake of national stability.

“Selangor Umno took note of the Malaysian Unity Government Secretariat’s queue and will create a state level Unity Government committee as well as holding programmes with the state government leadership,” the statement said.

Tengku Zafrul and Megat Zulkarnain both lost their Parliamentary seats to Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidates in last year’s general election.

Tengku Zafrul lost in Kuala Selangor to former Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad by 1,002 votes. Megat Zulkarnain fared worse, after failing to challenge current Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and his predecessor Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali — coming in third in a five-way battle.

Previously, it was reported that Tengku Zafrul may get a seat to contest in the Selangor state election.

Umno previously had also agreed to work together with PH for the state election, which will be held in six states including Selangor in the next few months.

In February, Megat Zulkarnain had announced that Umno had identified seats that they wanted to contest in the state election.

In a related matter, Selangor Umno in a same meeting had also unanimously agreed and signed a memorandum to request for the party top to defend their former president Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak who was imprisoned last year. — TMR
