Nazri appointed Ambassador-designate to US

DATUK Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz (picture) is the new Ambassador-designate of Malaysia to the US.

He is one of the 10 new Heads of Diplomatic Mission of Malaysia who received their Letters of Credence from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in a ceremony at Istana Negara today.

Nazri, who graduated from Lincoln’s Inn in the UK, has vast experience serving in previous Malaysian Cabinets. 

Prior to today’s appointment, he held various positions including as the Tourism and Culture Minister, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal Affairs), Entrepreneur Development Minister, Deputy Finance Minister and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

Also appointed yesterday was Datuk Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin as the Ambassador-designate of Malaysia to Indonesia.

He joined the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1994. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York since 2019.

He was the Ambassador of Malaysia to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (2017-2019) and Consul General of Malaysia in Dubai, UAE (2008-2010). 

His other overseas assignments include Jakarta, Indonesia; and New York, US.

He previously held the position of Undersecretary of South-East Asia Division, Special Officer to Minister and Special Officer to Secretary General.

He also held positions at the South-East Asia and South Pacific Division, and Economic Division.

Meanwhile, Datuk Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony was appointed the Ambassador-designate to the Philippines.

Abdul Malik joined the public service as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in 1996. 

He was previously the Ambassador of Malaysia to Italy since 2018, and concurrently accredited as Permanent Representative of Malaysia to Food and Agriculture Organisation, World Food Programme and International Fund for Agricultural Development.

He had served at diplomatic missions of Malaysia in London and Abuja, Nigeria. 

At the Foreign Affairs Ministry he served as Special Officer to the minister, Special Officer to the Secretary-General and also served at the South-East Asia Division.

Other appointments included Hendy Assan as Ambassador-designate to the Holy See, Hafizah Abdullah as Ambassador-designate to the Kingdom of Sweden, Gloria Corina Peter Tiwet as Ambassador-designate of Malaysia to Brazil, Ruzaimi Mohamad as High Commissioner-designate of Malaysia to Kenya, Suzilah Mohd Sidek as Ambassador-designate to the Czech Republic, Amarjit Singh as Ambassador-designate Timor-Leste, and ‘Alauddin Mohd Nor as Ambassador-designate to Kuwait.

The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin and the Deputy Secretary General for Bilateral Affairs of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Datuk Norman Muhamad. — TMR /pic by Bernama
