Indonesia’s President Jokowi congratulates Anwar

JAKARTA – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (picture) has congratulated Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his appointment as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Anwar was a figure who has long been known and respected by the people of Indonesia, wrote the president, who is popularly known as Jokowi, in a post on his social media account on Friday.

“I hope the closeness shared makes the relationship between the two countries stronger in all areas, especially on the economic front as well as on border and labour issues,” he said.

Jokowi, who was the first head of state to contact Anwar after his appointment, prayed that the prime minister would have the strength and tenacity in leading Malaysia.

Also expressing her congratulations was the leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Megawati Soekarnoputri, the eldest daughter of President Soekarno and once the 5th president of Indonesia.

According to PDI-P secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto, the last time the two leaders met was in October 2018 when Anwar was awarded the title of ‘Doctor Honoris Causa’ by Padang State University.

PDI-P hopes that Anwar’s administration will excel for the sake of Malaysia’s progress, realise political stability and increase Indonesia-Malaysia cooperation as well as regional stability through ASEAN.

The political party, represented by Jokowi, is also willing to establish cooperation with political parties in Malaysia, especially the Pakatan Harapan coalition, Hasto said in a statement. — BERNAMA
