THE Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) urged the Election Commission (EC) to have dedicated lanes at the polling centres for the seniors, expectant mothers and persons with disabilities.

According to MMA president Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai, expectant mothers and older persons can develop back pain issues from standing for long durations.

“Taking into account the possibility of higher voter turnout which may create a longer queueing time at polling stations nationwide since 18-year-olds are now eligible to vote, we strongly urge the commission to ensure a fast lane and conveniences for older persons, expectant mothers and the disabled,” he said in a statement today.

He also reminded all Malaysians to stay protected against Covid-19 by wearing a facemask throughout the polling process as the fight against Covid-19 is not over.

“It would also be advisable to have a light meal before heading to the polling centre as we aren’t sure how long the whole process will take.

“At the same time, be prepared also for both hot weather and rain by bringing along a hat, umbrella or raincoat. You may also want to bring along a water bottle in case you get thirsty.

“For diabetics, if the wait is too long, it will be important to keep a sweet or biscuit handy to prevent hypoglycemia,” he said.
