Southern Cable lands RM83m contract from Sarawak Energy

KEDAH-BASED Southern Cable Group Bhd’s unit has won a contract worth RM83.2 million to provide power cables and conductors to Sarawak Energy Bhd.

The cable and wire manufacturer’s wholly owned subsidiary Southern Cable Sdn Bhd won the 18-month contract which ends in April 2024, the company said in an exchange filing yesterday.

“We hope this will lead to increased tenders for us, and eventually higher revenue contribution from East Malaysia,” Southern Cable MD Tung Eng Hai said in a separate statement.

Tung said the company was recently appointed as a registered supplier with Sarawak Energy, allowing it to take part in larger-size tenders with the state power provider.

For the first half ended June 30, 2022, the company said East Malaysia contributed 11% or RM43.5 million of its total revenue of RM399.7 million, up 70.7% from the same period last year, attributed to higher orders from the construction and utility sectors.

The new win takes the group’s current order in hand to RM752.9 million, which includes the RM293.8 million supply contract secured from Tenaga Nasional Bhd in July 2022.

Southern Cable closed yesterday’s trade unchanged at 30 sen, with 557,000 shares changing hands, giving it market capitalisation of RM240 million. — TMR
