DAP picks Young Syefura for Bentong, replacing giantslayer Wong Tack

DAP has picked 33-year-old Young Syefura Othman (picture) to retain the party’s Bentong parliamentary seat which it won in 2018 after ousting MCA president Liow Tiong Lai.

If elected, Young Syefura will be DAP’s first female Malay MP. She was previously the state assemblyman of Ketari.

When announcing Pahang candidates for the 15th General Elections, DAP secretary general Loke Siew Fook said Bentong incumbent Wong Tack had declined the offer to contest in Cameron Highlands.

“We make decisions based on winnability…We don’t just want to defend Bentong and Raub, but we want to win Cameron Highlands and Lipis,” Loke told a press conference today.

Former Raub MP Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji will contest in Lipis, with former Tras assemblyman Chow Yu Hui taking the Raub seat. Cameron Highlands will go to former Tanah Rata assemblyman Chiong Yoke Kong.

Loke also announced the appointment of senior DAP leader and parliamentarian Teresa Kok as the party’s mentor to the Bentong parliamentary seat. — TMR / pic source: Young Syefura FB
