THE Election Commission (EC) has announced Nov 19, 2022, as the polling date for the 15th General Election (GE15) while the nomination of candidates will take place on Nov 5.
The campaigning period has been set for 14 days, from the date of nomination to 11.59pm on Nov 18, according to EC chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh (picture).
Caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced the dissolution of Parliament on Oct 10, after receiving the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s consent, to pave the way for an early GE15 to be held before the end of the year.
According to the law, the GE must be held within 60 days from the date of Parliament’s dissolution.
Abdul Ghani said the elections are expected to cost RM1.01 billion and about 21.17 million people are eligible to vote in GE15.
Those eligible for early voting will be able to do so on Nov 15, while registration for postal voting will end on Oct 23.
Meanwhile, six states, namely Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah decided not to dissolve their assemblies for now.
For Sabah, Sarawak, Johor and Melaka, the state assemblies are out of the equation as polls were held recently.
