THE 5G network rollout in the country is currently at 33%.

However, Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin said the ministry has been expecting challenges at the state levels due to red tape by local authorities.

“To date, eight areas have been equipped with 5G capabilities, especially in major towns,” he said at a press conference after witnessing a signing ceremony for 4G/5G collaboration between MRH Digital Sdn Bhd, Chendu Sihan Technology Stock Co Ltd and Cosmos International Consultancy Sdn Bhd.

Zahidi revealed that the eight areas with high-speed 5G coverage are Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Penang and Sabah, while the ministry is still in discussion with the Sarawak state government.

“The initial rollout in the Klang Valley might not be so much of a challenge, but once we go into states like Sarawak, we will see challenges similar to those faced by all other telcos,” he said.

He added that more than 2,100 sites have been prepared to shift to 5G technology for better connectivity.

Meanwhile, Zahidi hoped the memorandum of understanding signing between MRH, Chendu and Cosmos will provide solutions to boost 5G coverage in areas that are yet to be covered.

“Apart from the cities, we want 5G to be rolled out in rural areas for the benefit of all people,” he said.
