Huawei invests billions to find the right technology for different scenarios

Complex issues are hard to resolve with a single technology. The right solution always requires the synergy of multiple technologies, says Ding

HUAWEI invested US$22.4 billion (RM102 billion) last year in research and development (R&D) to find the right technology for the right scenario as part of its continuous innovation. This brings its total investment over the last decade to US$132.5 billion.

Huawei Enterprise Business Group president Ryan Ding (picture; below) said with 100,000 R&D engineers, the company has created many cutting-edge technologies in connectivity, computing and cloud.

Among these are CloudEngine, a data centre switch with zero packet loss using the “iLossless” algorithm; AirEngine AP series which uses an air interface slicing technology to provide signal control channels with five-nines availability; and an all-optical switching architecture that reduces physical size by 90% and power consumption by 60% using full optical switching and optical backplanes.

“Complex issues are hard to resolve with a single technology. The right solution always requires the synergy of multiple technologies.

“For example, producing a 3D medical image used to take more than a day but now, with a combination of technology, doctors can read the images directly in the system, and patients no longer need to wait,” Ding said today at Huawei Connect 2022 in Bangkok, Thailand.

This, he added, is just one example and that to date, Huawei has developed 26 product portfolios to support different scenarios.

To better support different scenarios, Huawei works with its partners to build three types of capabilities: Digital transformation consulting and planning; product and portfolio expertise; and solution development. Huawei offers support to its partners on enablement, platforms, funding and talent.

“Every year, we train more than 70,000 people and develop and verify more than 1,000 solutions with our partners through our OpenLabs.

“Over the next three years, we will invest US$300 million to support our partners and train more talent through our ICT (information and communications technology) academies and Huawei Authorised Learning Partners,” Ding said.

He said with its partners’ support, Huawei’s revenue from the enterprise business reached US$8.17 billion in the first half of this year, a rise of 27.6% over 2021.

Huawei’s data communications products have also been named Gartner Customers’ Choice for 10 times in three years, its optical transmission and access products ranked first in market share for 13 straight years, while its storage products have been Leaders in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for six years.

“Huawei Cloud is among the world’s top five clouds,” Ding concluded.

Huawei Connect 2022, taking place from Sept 19 to Sept 21, 2022, is the first of the series held outside of China. Over 10,000 ICT industry leaders, experts and partners from around the world are present to explore digital productivity, promote the digital economy and build up stronger digital ecosystems more effectively.

Themed “Unleash Digital”, the event will see more than 15 innovative cloud services launched for the global market.
