PARTI Pejuang Tanah Air chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (picture) claimed that Umno has now turned into a “total bribery” party and the imprisonment of its former president Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak does not “cleanse” the largest Malay party.

Dr Mahathir said Umno’s top leaders are now recognised worldwide as corruptors, multi-billions stealers, power abusers as well as pests that destroyed the governance and its own party.

“Umno has now shifted into a total bribery party — from the top leadership all the way down to the grassroots.

“Umno’s culture today is not the culture of the party when it was formed. This is no longer an Umno party,” Dr Mahathir tweeted yesterday.

Dr Mahathir, who was former Umno president for 22 years, also claimed that bribery in the party involved almost all of its members from the supreme council to the ordinary members.

“Even though Umno members can sack these leaders, they haven’t leveraged on Umno’s constitution to cleanse the party.

“Instead, they continue to support the president who will eventually be convicted and jailed too,” he said.

He criticised Umno’s actions who accused Najib of being mistreated after being imprisoned and the court’s allegedly acting unfairly against the former prime minister.

“What is unfair is the action of Najib trying to cover up the elephant’s carcass by firing anyone who tries to investigate the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

“For example, police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers were changed and frozen, while police are directed to arrest anyone who reports or criticises 1MDB and Najib publicly,” he noted.

Therefore, he calls that Umno must be defeated and removed from the government.

“Umno needs to be defeated and replaced with a Malay party that holds fast to the principles of the Malay’s championing, nation and religion.

“I am sad. But the truth is, I have to accept it. The party I used to know has been destroyed because of the belief that ‘Cash is King’,” he said.

Dr Mahathir left Umno just before the 2018 General Election and has formed two new parties since, namely Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Pejuang.

Recently, he formed a Malay’s coalition, Gabungan Tanah Air (GTA), representing NGOs, individuals, academics and professional groups from the Malay community.
