STANDARD Chartered Bank Malaysia Bhd (StanChart Malaysia) has appointed Mak Joon Nien (picture) as MD and CEO effective Aug 18.

In a statement today, StanChart Malaysia said Mak will report to the bank’s cluster CEO, Singapore and Asean markets Patrick Lee.

Mak, who has been appointed as the bank’s first Malaysian CEO, succeeds Abrar A Anwar, who has been the StanChart Malaysia CEO since 2017.

Abrar will remain as StanChart Malaysia board member until year end to ensure a smooth and orderly transition.

He will also be supporting several regional initiatives within the bank.

Meanwhile, the bank has also appointed Patricia Wong to succeed Mak as head of client coverage CCIB Malaysia.

She will be double-hatting as regional head of global subsidiaries — Asean.

Commenting on the two appointments, Lee said Malaysia remains an important market for Standard Chartered and they are committed to grow the franchise with focus on network businesses, sustainable finance, affluent and digital mass retail segments.

He noted that Mak and Wong’s appointments also demonstrate the bank’s strong succession planning to build an effective and sustainable leadership pipeline of local talents across its network.

Lee also expressed his appreciation to Abrar for his significant contributions in Malaysia over the last five years.

“The steady growth trajectory of the franchise is a testament to Abrar’s strong leadership,” he said.
