THE recently passed Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No 3) 2022 will now be sent to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah (picture) for his consent in accordance with Article 66 of the Federal Constitution.
The amendment allows all states to amend their respective constitutions by including provisions prohibiting party switching.
This is a follow-up action after Dewan Negara approved the bill on Aug 9, 2022, with a 52-majority vote, while seven members were absent.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will make a notification by letter to all Mentri Besar and Chief Ministers to recommend all states make the said amendment.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this is for the standardisation with federal law under Article 71 of the Federal Constitution.
“The federal government hopes that all states will adopt this proposed provision so that political stability can be maintained and system standardisation can be achieved not only at the federal level but also at the state level,” he said in a statement today.
