THE Indonesian DJ duo known as Diskoria promises super-high energy for their first ever big-scale performance in Malaysia on Aug 20.
Known for their unique brand of disco, funk and retro pop, the Indonesian DJ and songwriting duo formed by Merdi Simanjuntak and Fadli Aat will be performing for one night only at RexKL in Kuala Lumpur (KL).
Merdi said the duo has played in KL before, but this performance is definitely going to be different.
“For one, RexKL is a bigger venue and we have numerous new materials to play live for our Malaysian fans for the first time.”
For Aat, Diskoria is more than just about the music, it is a movement.
“We truly believe in the potential of regional music and we are proud to represent Indonesia in introducing our pop and disco music aesthetics to the rest of the world, especially the more sophisticated young generation of Asian music fans,” he said.
Regionally known for their unique styling of writing and playing Indonesian dance music, as well as bringing back the glory days of disco, funk and retro pop, Diskoria was formed at the beginning of 2015.
It started from their shared vision of reintroducing Indonesian disco music to people unfamiliar with the genre, due to lack of available information and awareness.
Being avid collectors of vinyl, Merdi and Aat felt that Indonesian disco music has a strong potential to contribute to the Jakarta dance music scene.
“With various collaborations, Diskoria has managed to garner fantastic following not just in Indonesia, but around the region,” said Merdi.
At the height of the pandemic, Diskoria released C.H.R.I.S.Y.E in 2021 – a dance single that subtly honours the legendary Indonesian music icon, Chrisye, by including 24 of his song titles in the lyrics.
Each line of the chorus also starts with a letter that make up the name “Chrisye”. Teaming up with Laleilmanino, the collaboration also features singer Eva Celia.
Previously, Diskoria worked with one of Indonesia’s most celebrated actress, Dian Sastrowardoyo, on the hit track “Serenata Jiwa Lara”.
Organised by KL-based Tala Records Asia, Diskoria’s performance will feature two Malaysian electronica DJ duos, Bad Habit and Karpet Terbang.
