THE Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) has confirmed that the floating cooking oil found in the Java Sea is not from Malaysia.

Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that the matter had been brought to his attention by several sources, including the media.

“We understand the viral video circulating online. It is true that the oil was found in the Java Sea. However, we have confirmed that it is not packaged cooking oil that comes under the subsidy scheme,” he said during the KPDNHEP Pavilion opening ceremony at Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism 2022 Exhibition.

Nanta Linggi also touched on the issue of the sale of cooking oil in bottles above the ceiling level.

“We are notified of such cases by various parties. We have already gazetted and we have announced on Aug 8 that the price of 5kg of cooking oil should be sold at RM 34.70.”

The ministry, he said, would continue to monitor the situation closely and would take appropriate action against any violators.

However, Nanta Linggi added that the ministry did not want to be too stringent but also wanted to ensure fairness among consumers.

“We want economic recovery and so on. We don’t want to be too harsh. But if we are not strict, we won’t be able to implement the rules of the law. If people disobey the law, other people will be negatively affected. So, we ask for the cooperation of all users and also the industry. That’s what we hope for.”

In regards to government-linked companies (GLCs) entering the packaged cooking oil market, he said that the Ministry is open to their participation.

“We have received many suggestions, including from GLCs. We will consider everything before making a decision.

“The reason why we are together is to help in this situation of subsidised packaged cooking oil and also so that there are no more areas in the whole country without it. There are no other areas. So, we would want to see what their recommendations are,” he concluded.
