THE Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) has a host of programmes lined up for August and September, from a classical delight to a tribute to a beloved composer famous for his iconic film scores.
Also on the cards are three anime concerts and a Family Fun Day concert themed “How the Gimquat Found Her Song”, so there’s definitely something for everybody planned at Kuala Lumpur’s Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP).
First up on Saturday Aug 13 at 830pm is “Vivaldi: The Four Seasons” concert featuring MPO concertmaster Peter Daniš as the violin soloist and leader. The MPO will perform, among others, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons song about nature as well as Grieg’s Baroque-inspired From Holberg’s Time and Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No 10.
Due to popular demand, the MPO will then be performing not one, but three anime concerts on Friday Aug 26 at 8:30pm, Saturday Aug 27 at 8:30pm and Sunday Aug 28 at 3pm.
Themed “Symphonic Anime”, the MPO and resident conductor Naohisa Furusawa will present an array of favourite anime songs including Japanese composer and musical director Joe Hisaishi’s “Princess Mononoke”, “Spirited Away” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, as well as themes from iconic anime series such as “Naruto” and “One Piece”.
However, tickets to all three “Symphonic Anime” concerts were sold out within three hours of its opening.
Then, on Saturday Sept 3 at 11:30am and 2:30pm, join the MPO and Furusawa again as they embark on a musical expedition to help a discouraged bird discover her unique voice. Presented by the Platypus Theatre, this Family Fun Day concert themed “How the Gimquat Found Her Song” is a heart-warming tale about the search for identity and a celebration of music in all of its forms.
Laugh, chant and sing along with Gimquat and her wizard guide as they explore musical styles from Vivaldi and Mozart to Duke Ellington and even rap!
Lastly, the MPO will pay tribute to legendary composer John Williams on his 90th birthday in a concert themed “Happy Birthday John Williams!” on Saturday Sept 17 at 8:30 pm.
The MPO and resident conductor Gerard Salonga celebrate John Williams’ illustrious career, spanning 70 years, by performing some of his iconic soundtracks from hit movies “ET”, “Superman”, “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars”. Don’t miss out on this cinematic extravaganza in true surround sound as the movies come to life on the DFP stage!
