HUAWEI Malaysia has inked a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Halal Development Corp Bhd (HDC) and Duriemas Sdn Bhd.

The MoU focuses on utilising Huawei Technologies Co’s cloud-based digital solutions, to promote and strengthen the halal industry ecosystem through HDC’s Halal Integrated Platform (HIP).

The collaboration will enhance all parties’ expertise especially in the area of technical assistance, to strengthen the food track and trace solutions, as well as the food and quality assurance system through implementing start-of-the-art cloud technology.

It is also aimed at exploring new opportunities for halal industry players.

The deal will allow HIP online platform to be the catalyst within halal ecosystem connecting the industry players to the global halal market.

Furthermore, it will cover additional HDC services such Halal Parks, the Halal Training Institute, Halal Consultancy & Advisory and the Halal Knowledge Centre.

In addition, two Halal Promotion Centres will be established by HDC, Duriemas and Huawei Malaysia through this partnership in the Chinese cities of Qingdao and Urumqi.

Both the Malaysia-Qingdao Halal Promotion Centre and the Malaysia-Urumqi Halal Promotion Centre will act as platforms to further develop the halal commerce sector in China and beyond.

China has always been one of Malaysia’s top importers of halal products, with imports recorded at RM4.6 billion in 2021.

CEO of HDC, Hairol Ariffein Sahari (left), said in a statement that this partnership will increase HDC’s capacity in halal industry through digital solutions from Huawei Malaysia and Duriemas.

“China has always been a target market for us, and we also believe it is the ‘right’ market for the halal industry, where currently 60% of halal exports are to China.

“This initiative will pilot the ‘track and trace system’ using blockchain for Malaysian halal products and open up more opportunities for HIP members to expand their market access to China,” Hairol Ariffein said.

Under the MoU, HDC as a custodian of the HIP, among others, will administer, market and liaise with government bodies on the Halal Industry Database.

Meanwhile, Duriemas, a technology consulting and market development company, will facilitate and coordinate the establishment and operations of the Halal Trade Route in Port Klang, Selangor, along with the centres in Qingdao and Urumqi.

Through its extensive market growth channels, the company will also support HIP engagements among the centres in order to hasten further expansion into other Asian markets.

In response to the collaboration, Duriemas group executive chairman Winston Chia (centre) is optimistic that this collaboration and the setting up of the Halal Promotion Centres in Qingdao and Urumqi will be a start toward successful ventures into the Northern and Western China halal market.

“This route will also open the Central Asia market as Urumqi is the gateway to Central Asia where 450 million Muslims are located.

“I am proud and honoured that the Duriemas Group is playing a part in this collaboration with HDC and Huawei Malaysia that will shape the future of food security tracing and halal products from Malaysia to Western China and Central Asia,” said Chia.

In addition to that, Huawei Malaysia will provide technical infrastructure support through leveraging its cloud solutions and integrate it with HDC’s HIP.

Huawei Malaysia will also provide technical, functional and marketing support for all products in the Halal Food Supply System to stakeholders.

Huawei Malaysia cloud and artificial intelligence business group VP Lim Chee Siong (right) said the MoU enables Huawei Malaysia to utilise its technology to be used in the halal supply chain and allows for the company to diversify its operations into new markets.

“As a technology partner, Huawei Malaysia has the skills, expertise and experience needed to fulfil this initiative’s ambitions by driving digital innovation through the utilisation of Huawei’s solutions in the HIP system.

“With HDC, we are fortunate to have the premier halal industry expertise of Malaysia which we believe will assist in expanding the halal market internationally and drive positive changes in the halal industry in China,” he added.

This collaboration will also drive a competitive advantage and opportunities for local companies to accelerate the local digital economy.

“By accelerating the digital transformation of the halal sector, we will further solidify Malaysia’s standing as the Asean digital hub and also as a leading Asean halal hub,” he added.

Huawei’s cloud service is an open, easy-to-use, flexible and efficient technology that focuses on a platform built using cloud technology to help ecosystem partners quickly and efficiently build solutions and applications.
