THE Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) today received business zakat payments amounting to RM11.2 million from 20 corporate companies for the 2020-2022 period.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Ahmad Marzuki Shaary said as of June 2022, the amount of zakat collection at PPZ-MAIWP increased by 9% compared to the same period in 2021.
“A total of RM423 million was collected as of June this year compared to RM387 million last year and of that amount, RM56.6 million was from business zakat,” he said at the corporate zakat handover ceremony today.
PPZ-MAIWP is targeting RM900 million in total zakat collection this year.
Its chairman Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman said looking at the current economic uncertainties, it is difficult to gauge any increase or decrease in business zakat collections.
However, he was optimistic that corporate companies in Malaysia are aware of their business zakat obligations.
“If those of us who still have monthly incomes are affected by the current situation, even more are the less fortunate.
“I call on companies and individuals to pay zakat so we can continue to help the asnaf of the Federal Territories,” he added.
