GOOGLE Malaysia launched its new digital training programme known as Gemilang today, offering Malaysians 31,000 scholarships through local partners, comprising education institutions, industry partners and non-profits to boost digital skills.
The programme provides digital skilling opportunities for Malaysians from all backgrounds to obtain Google Career Certificates that will equip them with digital skills and knowledge primarily to support the high-demand jobs.
“We focus on skills across six areas mainly data analytics, IT support, IT automation, project management, UX design, and digital marketing and e-commerce,” Google Malaysia MD Marc Woo said during the launch today.
As flexibility is a new demand, the programme will enable the learner to progress at their own pace while getting hands-on fundamental skills designed by Google’s in-house experts.
Google will partner with education institutions including Mereka Academy, industry partners including Celcom Axiata Bhd, Trainocate and non-profits including Girls in Tech, Malaysian Digital Association, Women in Tech and Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman to distribute the scholarships.
The tech company has also formed an employer consortium to connect graduates from Gemilang with employers who recognise the qualifications and digital skills.
Current members of the consortium, in addition to Google, include Amanz, Carsome, Fave Asia, IPG Mediabrands, Jirnexu, Malayan Banking Bhd, McDonald’s Malaysia, Omnicom Media Group, Petroliam Nasional Bhd, REV Media Group, The Star Media Group, The Lorry, Storehub and Astro Awani.
Celcom CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi said the Gemilang training programme will boost the confidence and competitive edge of the local talents, which leads to greater employability.
“Celcom is proud to be collaborating with Google to digitally upskill jobseekers and mid-career employees to thrive in today’s digital economy. The programme and Celcom’s pillar of advocating ‘Equity in Education’ strengthen our shared objective of inclusivity and empowering the underserved community by offering equal growth opportunities to our local talents,” he said.
Google Cloud is partnering with universities, like Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), to offer the Google Cloud training curriculum to equip undergraduates with technical proficiency in cloud computing and other relevant skills.
“UNITEN aims to increase digital skills knowledge and maximise the benefits of technology. We believe that by incorporating Google Cloud Computing Foundations in the Bachelor in Information Technology (Information Systems) will help students to better prepare for careers in the cloud-first world,” UNITEN’s Dean of College of Computing & Informatics Dr Zainuddin Hassan said.
