MAHB records 34.1m passenger movements in 1H22

The domestic passenger movements in June continued above the 4m-mark for the 2nd consecutive month

MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has registered 34.1million passenger movements in the first half of 2022 (1H22) with its total domestic passenger movements increased by over six times year-on-year to 20.25 million passengers.

Meanwhile, the international passenger movements across MAHB’s network of airports during the period also reached a new high from 2020 with 2.6 million passengers.

The company said in an exchange filing yesterday that the domestic passenger movements in June continued above the four million-mark for the second consecutive month.

Malaysia’s June 2022 international average load factor recorded above the 70% level at 72.9% for the first time, an increase of 5.2 percentage points over May 2022.

MAHB also expected the encouraging trend in load factors provided optimism that long haul traffic is gradually gaining momentum.

However, it noted that the international traffic is still in the early stage of recovery at 30% of pre-Covid levels.

“Other international airports in our local network have also recorded increased passenger volumes between 35% and 66% in June compared to the preceding month. We are confident this will improve further with the resumption of more airlines operating at our airports,” MAHB MD Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood said in a statement yesterday.

MAHB added that traffic at the Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport continued to gain momentum since June 2021, having  reached 81.4% pre-Covid levels in 1H22.
