FELINE lovers can adopt a cat from Penang’s own Cat Beach Sanctuary (picture) by purchasing a Digital Twin NFT (non-fungible token) artwork starting July 23, 2022.
The Penang cats are being immortalised by artists as permanent, tradable tokens and these NFTs will be available for sale by credit card or cryptocurrency.
The NFTs are part of the wildpawsnft.com project created by Singapore-based wildcats.io to build a sustainable future for animal shelters with the help of NFT technology.
Real cats from shelters across Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand will “go virtual” as Digital Twins that can be purchased as an NFT.
A total of 5,555 NFT artworks will be available as of July 14, 2022, on wildpawsnft.com and proceeds from the sales will go to benefit cat shelters throughout South-East Asia.
Unlike traditional NFTs that are typically authenticated artworks, the Wildpaws’ Digital Twin collection authenticates a real cat that lives in one of the partnering shelter’s facilities. Meaning, each NFT cat represents a real-life cat.
Each NFT contains unique biometric data of the adopted cat. By owning the Wildpaws NFT, your cat will gain access to better medical care (including vaccinations, medicine and prescription diets) and overall higher quality of living.
NFT ownership rights also include shelter membership benefits, discounts at partner services and access to exclusive events.
The Digital Twin NFTs are part of a larger Felines With Benefits (FWB) collection, which also features 5,555 Meow-taverse Cats — a colourful and imaginative pantheon of neighbourhood cats, rare cats and legendary cats like Pi-cat-so, a rainbow cat with psychedelic fur.
Each FWB NFT sold sees 25% to 100% of profit given to shelter partners. Special business partnerships include ZumVet, which offers remote veterinary services across Asean; Cate for Cat, which offers a community and product page for cat lovers; and Pawtner cat adoption mobile app.
Wildcats CEO Melissa Lo said the team is committed to maximising the contribution for shelters and every single shelter was vetted personally during the selection process.
“The success of Wildpaws is important because it demonstrates that meaningful value can be created by NFTs and profitable business models that truly impact our communities for good.”
Shelter partners include The Old Cat Bali, Catster Club, Whisker’s Syndicate, Cate for Cat, ZumVet, Pawtner cat adoption application and Penang’s Cat Beach Sanctuary.
Cat Beach Sanctuary cares for some 300 cats and kittens on Penang’s Teluk Bahang beach. The sanctuary shelters cats rescued from desperate, often life-or-death situations.
Visitors and volunteers are always welcome during daylight hours. Admission is by donation — bring gifts for the cats or make a donation of RM10 or more.
