Applications for 2022 Digital Content Grants are open

THE Communications and Multimedia Malaysia Ministry’s (K-KOMM) 2022 Digital Content Grants for creative industry players are now open for application.

The grants have been introduced through the Malaysian Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) under the Malaysian Creative Industry Stimulus Package 2022.

Companies, enterprises and sole proprietorships or even limited liability partnerships can apply for funds worth up to RM50,000.

Its minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa (picture) said these funds will enable them to develop new or existing content in the marketplace in the form of animation, digital comics, interactive media and digital games.

“Selected applicants will be invited to a presentation session in August 2022, before approval is announced by September 2022.

“Upon approval, grant recipients will be given six months to complete their digital content, covering either Short Animated Films, Pilot Episodes, Short Trailers, content for Public Service Order Announcements, Digital Games/Complete Interactive Media (Demo or Prototype), or Digital Comics/Complete Mobile Comics,” he said in a statement today.

Annuar believed that the 2022 Digital Content Grant is highly important to help digital content creators realise their ideas in the form of ready-to-market products.

MDEC received 111 applications from this grant last year where a total of RM1.9 million grants were approved and benefitted 39 applicants.

The grant is part of a series of funding initiatives for the creative content industry this year.

“Digital content creators have a variety of interesting ideas but it is hard for them to get started and funded.

“Therefore, I am confident that through this 2022 Digital Content Grant, MDEC will not only provide access to funding but also assist them in the production of marketable digital content as their ideas will be evaluated by a panel of industry experts,” he added.

The minister also explained how the digital creative content industry is one of Malaysia’s fastest growing industries and one of the focus industries under Malaysia Digital.

In order for this industry to remain viable, sustainable and competitive, MDEC has channelled its efforts to ensure it receives the support it needs.

“The Digital Content Grant, introduced in 2021, aims to assist and promote the continuity and sustainability of the country’s creative industry practitioners in line with the new norms following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Since 2016, MDEC has approved 94 projects worth RM36.4 million to digital creative content companies to fund their ideas at the development stage and ensure they are investor-friendly,” Annuar explained.
