PROTON has launched the latest edition of its best-selling C-segment SUV — the 2022 Proton X70 Minor Chance 1 (MC1) with a 1.5L TGDi turbocharged direct injection engine — presenting a new compact alternative to the familiar 1.8L TGDi engine.
It comes in five variants — namely 1.5 TGDi Standard two-wheel drive (2WD) at a starting price of RM93,900, 1.5 TGDi Executive 2WD (RM105,500), 1.5 TGDi Executive all-wheel drive (AWD) (RM111,300), 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD (RM117,900) and 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD (RM121,800).
The national carmaker said the latest 1.5L TGDi engine was built in Tanjung Malim, Perak, involving over 100 global experts and recording over 12 million kilometres of testing in the most extreme and stressful conditions and climates.
With higher efficiency per cylinder and a more compact engine packaging, chosen to suit contemporary millennial drivers, the 1.5L TGDi engine achieves a maximum power output of 177PS and torque of 255Nm, reaching its peak earlier at 1500rpm with a 7% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the 1.8L TGDi engine.
Proton also noted that customers now have the option to choose the AWD variant, equipped with a real-time smart AWD system, which automatically transfers torque to the rear wheels on demand, thus improving handling according to varying road conditions.
Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah said the Proton X70 model has maintained its position as the best-selling C-segment SUV since its launch.
He added that Proton promises a similar level of performance to the 1.8L TGDi variant while adding improved fuel efficiency, thus fulfilling customers’ desire for an SUV that is not only outstanding in performance, features and aesthetic appeal but is also affordable to own and run.
“Over 70,000 units have already been sold and today, we have added styling updates and a 1.5L TGDi engine to the range to offer prospective buyers more choice.
“The local assembly of the 1.5L TGDi engine showcases Proton’s commitment towards the next-generation automotive research and development, as well as our production capability. We are determined to expand our path to the IR4.0 economy, and this is just one milestone on our technology roadmap,” Roslan said.
The 2022 Proton X70 also offers enhanced features for the driver and passengers’ comfort and a refreshed look, including quartz black finishing on the front and rear bumpers, new 19-inch alloy wheels, a power tailgate with foot sensor and Nappa leather seats with new black headlining.
For added comfort and peace of mind, it comes with the Proton Intelligent Air Purification System.
The 2022 Proton X70 was awarded the 5-star Asean NCAP rating, supported by a comprehensive list of safety features such as six SRS airbags, an Advanced Driver Assistance System, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, and a 360° camera with a 3D display for hassle-free parking.
The exterior colour options for the 2022 Proton X70 are Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey, Ruby Red, Cinnamon Brown and Space Grey, offered in accordance with the variant chosen.
