FGV Agri Services Sdn Bhd has launched Butik S, the first-generation rodenticide for usage in the integration of cage owls under the Paddy Production Incentive Scheme (SIPP).

The anticoagulant bait is formulated from several ingredients that are palatable for rats and designed to have the proper weight, shape and colour to attract rats.

FGV Holdings Bhd CEO Mohd Nazrul Izam Mansor said Butik S is safe for farmers as it is less toxic than the second-generation rat poison.

“Butik S is ideally implemented in Integrated Pest Management as it has no side effects on non-target species such as owls and cats.

“It is also easy to use, only requiring 40 pieces of bait for 1ha or equivalent to 12 pieces of bait for each rice field. The cost of its application is very competitive and more economical at up to 15% per hectare compared to self-mixed rat baits,” he said in a statement today.

Furthermore, paddy production could be increased, hence addressing the ongoing food shortage crisis.

Butik S is widely used in the oil palm plantation sector and is registered as a chemical pesticide input under the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry’s SIPP programme in January 2021.

According to research, rat infestations can result in losses of up to RM43 million a year or equivalent to 87,332 tonnes (5%) of national rice production. Cases of severe rat infestation can cause losses of up to 25%.

Previously, farmers used several methods in dealing with rat attacks such as using barn owls, installing traps and destruction of rat holes.

FGV Agri Services is collaborating with AMCO Niaga Sdn Bhd for the supply and distribution of Butik S.
