THE Dewan Rakyat has issued a notice informing that a special sitting will be called on April 11 for the tabling of the Anti-Party Hopping Bill.

Parliament secretary Dr Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin said the Dewan Rakyat has been informed by Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that for the benefit of the public, it is important for the council to hold a special meeting before the date of the next meeting which has been set in accordance with Standing Order 11 (3) of the Dewan Rakyat.

He said this in a letter addressed to all MPs last Friday.

“Therefore, I hereby notify the Honourable Members that the special meeting of the Dewan Rakyat will be held on April 11, 2022 (Monday), at 10am at the Parliament building.

“The matters to be brought for the special meeting are the Federal Constitution (Amendments) 2022 Bill related to anti-party hopping and limiting the term of office of the PM,” he said.

Previously, the PM’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had announced that the Anti-Party Hopping Bill would be tabled at a special Parliament session on April 11.

“I had the opportunity to discuss this with the PM and we have agreed to hold a meeting on April 11 to debate on the Anti-Party Hopping Bill,” he noted in his speech at the Dewan Rakyat on March 24.

On March 23, DAP secretary general Anthony Loke said that the PM had given his commitment that the bill to amend the Federal Constitution to prevent party hopping will be tabled in a special session during the month of Ramadhan.

“The main agenda of the meeting was on the status of the tabling of the Constitutional Amendment Bill to prevent party hopping among elected representatives,” said Loke in a statement.

The amendment is one of the main conditions in the memorandum of understanding between the federal government and Pakatan Harapan leaders signed in September last year.
