MAA: Vehicle sales up 8% MoM in February


SALES of new vehicles in Malaysia increased to 43,722 units in February 2022 from 40,581 units in January 2022, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). 

MAA said of the total, passenger vehicles accounted for 38,823 units and commercial vehicles comprised 4,899 units. 

“Total industry volume for February was 8% higher than January, which was at 40,581 units as auto companies ramped up production to fulfil backlog orders,” it said in a statement yesterday. 

Sales volume for February 2022 was also 10% higher than the corresponding period year in 2021. 

From a production standpoint, a total of 47,445 vehicles were produced in February 2022 compared to 42,961 units in February 2021 including some 3,846 commercial vehicles. 

MAA expects the sales in March 2022 to be 

higher than February 2022 as companies push for higher sales for their financial year ending on March 31. Last week, Proton Holdings Bhd stated that its sales surged 107% month-on-month (MoM) to 9,225 units in February 2022, following the full resumption of production activities at its Shah Alam and Tanjung Malim manufacturing plants. 

Proton’s export increased by 72.8% year-on-year (YoY) to 323 units for its various models this year. 

Meanwhile, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd stated that its sales jumped by 27% to 6,366 units of Toyota and 66 Lexus vehicles in February 2022 compared to 5,026 units Toyotas and 48 Lexus sold in February 2021. 

According to UMW Holdings Bhd, Pero- dua registered a car sales volume of 17,421 units in February 2022, 5.1% YoY as the group top-selling model for the month was the recently-facelifted Myvi, followed by the Axia and Bezza.
