Aggressive demand for CNY travel bookings on Shopee

MALAYSIAN signals optimism for travelling as Shopee’s travel booking platform observed a threefold increase in travel bookings for buses and flights in the first two weeks of January compared to the same period in December 2021.

Shopee Malaysia head of marketing campaigns Kenneth Soh (picture) said the increase in booking numbers reflects the confidence among Malaysians to travel again.

In particular, an uptick of times was observed for Chinese New Year (CNY) travel dates from Jan 24 to Feb 2, 2022.

“Malaysian appear to be taking necessary precautions to reunite with their families and loved ones as observed by increased demand for face masks and ShopeePay Vouchers for Covid-19 test kits on the platform,” he said during the Shopee CNY Luncheon 2022 recently.

Soh added Shopee and its travel partner will continue to provide a seamless, safe and stress-free booking experience for flights, buses and hotels on the platform to serve Malaysians for the upcoming CNY.

It is partnering Agoda, Airpaz and Easybook.com to fulfil travellers’ needs with the CNY Travel Campaign from now until Jan 26, 2022.

For this campaign, Malaysians can enjoy a 10% discount (capped at RM20) on bus tickets, hotel, or flight bookings via the Tickets, Top-Ups and Bills in-app portal on Shopee.

Users who booked during the campaign period will automatically be enrolled into a lucky draw where they stand the chance to win the grand prize of 3 days 2 nights stay at Camar Langkawi Resort with RM250 flights voucher.

Meanwhile, Airpaz VP of Business Development Wesley Wijaya said this month, Airpaz is targeting a 100% increase in air travel bookings on the Shopee platform.

“We are expecting a positive rebound as people are now more confident in travelling given the increase in vaccination rate and reopening of travel routes. We hope that air travel will fully recover by the end of 2022,” he said.

Easybook.com MD William Lee added that there is an uptrend for bus bookings in top destinations and 20 times more demand on vaccinated travel lane bus tickets for CNY.

“The travel booking was dropped during the CNY celebrations last year due to the lockdown, and we hope the sales of bus tickets are expected to soar leading up to CNY this year,” Lee said.

Similarly, booking website Agoda, believes that partnership with Shopee makes travel even more accessible, seamless and hassle-free.

Agoda, Malaysia & Brunei country director Cleland Robertson agreed that travel optimism and hope are returning this CNY.

“Travellers can find some great value deals on our platform whether they plan to travel with family and friends to a beach villa or take a couples’ staycation in the city,” he added.

As for the Shopee CNY Sale, the platform is offering free shipping with a minimum spend of RM8 and 88% off bonus where users will enjoy 88% discount vouchers on CNY products and a chance to win RM8,888 ang pow when they play the Shopee Fortune Quiz during the Shopee Live session at 8pm daily, until Feb 2.

Whereas for ShopeePay users, from Jan 18 to Feb 7, they will stand a chance to win up to 8,888 Shopee coins when they transfer a minimum of RM2.88 via the e-ang pow feature to their families and friends.
