BANGKOK – Applying for Thai citizenship is more expensive now.

Deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said Thailand’s cabinet on Tuesday approved the new regulations where foreigners applying for Thai citizenship must pass a Thai language test set by a subcommittee.

She said applicants must show a certificate from the Education Ministry to prove they have completed at least primary education in Thailand.

Under the old regulations, applicants are required to “have knowledge of the Thai language”.

Besides that, she said the cabinet agreed to double the application fee for adults from 5,000 Thai baht to 10,000 baht.

“The application fee for children was from 2,500 baht to 5,000 baht,” she said.

Among the benefits of obtaining a Thai nationality includes the right to own property, ability to work in Thailand without a work permit and being able to own shares in Thai companies.
