THE US government, through the US International Development Agency, has donated RM420,000 to help Malaysian households affected by the recent floods.

The contribution was made to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies who are involved with flood relief efforts.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur expressed its sympathy to the victims of the recent floods in Malaysia and said the funds will support the provision of health services to the affected households including providing medical services, disease prevention and mental health.

It’s Chargé d’affaires Michael Newbill (picture) said the embassy hoped the funds will help provide relief for the victims and that he and his colleagues pulled together to raise funds to help members of their embassy community whose homes and families were also impacted by the flooding.

“We appreciate the tireless work of the Malaysian Red Crescent and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in responding to this disaster, and for their ongoing work supporting Covid-19 relief efforts,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Red Crescent Society secretary general Hakim Hamzah said the generous funds from the US will be a big help in their ongoing efforts, as they provide further relief, including food, safe water, medical supplies and hygiene kits to people across the worst-affected areas in Malaysia.

Head of Malaysia Delegation, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Alka Kapoorsharma said the recent floods came as a double blow for Malaysians amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
