Repair work on communication towers in progress

As of Dec 22, a total of 342 communication towers were affected by massive oods in Selangor

THE efforts to repair communication towers affected by the massive floods in Central Malaysia are being actively carried out by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM) through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with telecommunication companies.

As of Dec 22, a total of 342 communication towers were affected in Selangor with 153 towers having successfully resumed operations and 189 towers still in overhaul.

The locations of the affected towers include Bangi, Banting, Dengkil, Hulu Langat, Jenjarom, Kajang, Klang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Pandan Indah, Puchong, Rawang, Sepang, Serdang, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Sungai Buloh and Telok Panglima Garang.

KKMM Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa (picture) said delays in repair work were due to MCMC and telecommunication companies not being able to access the tower locations. Moreover, electricity supply was temporarily cut off by Tenaga Nasional Bhd for the safety of residents.

“As soon as the electricity supply is available, affected telecommunication towers are expected to resume operation and transmitters in the affected areas will be reactivated soonest,” he said in a statement yesterday.

MCMC is also in the process of enlisting the help of amateur radio services as an alternative communication channel for the affected areas, and to date several amateur radio systems have begun operations and were deployed in some areas severely affected by the flood catastrophe.

KKMM has advised residents to give some time for the intensive mitigation measures to be carried out to ensure all residents may resume usage of telecommunication services soonest.
