Kajang’s food manufacturer fined for water pollution

A FOOD manufacturing factory in Kajang was compounded after it was suspected to discharge liquid waste at a nearby drain that flows to Sungai Rinching, Semenyih and polluted the river.

Selangor state assemblyman Hee Loy Sian (picture) said in a statement yesterday that Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) received a complaint with regards to bubbly formation on the water surface at Kampung Rinching Tengah on Wednesday.

“Investigation by LUAS found foam on the surface of Sungai Rinching. A thorough investigation was then conducted with Majlis Perbandaran Kajang (MPKj) and the Department of Environment (DoE).

“Results of the investigation led to the discovery of foam along the drainage system from an industrial area near Fasa 7 Kesuma Beranang,” he said.

Hee said a further investigation by LUAS had traced the foam to a food manufacturing company that was suspected to discharge the pollutant into a nearby drain. LUAS, MPKj and DoE also investigated the factory’s premise.

LUAS and DoE will send the sampling at the final discharge point to be analysed by the Department of Chemistry Malaysia while the MPKj has issued a compound to the factory for the pollution.

“LUAS also took several samples at different locations such as the polluted area, the water beyond the factory’s premises as well as at the drain’s upstream flow before the factory for analysis.

“However, it found no traces of foam in the flow of water at the drain’s upstream near the factory,” he said.

Hee added that LUAS has opened an investigation paper based on Section 79(1) LUAS Enactment 1991 that calls for a minimum fine of RM200,000 and a maximum fine of RM1 million and jail for more than three years.

To date, 14 pollution issues (Code Yellow) have been addressed at Lembangan Sungai Langat which is at risk to the halt of operations at the water treatment plant.
