KUALA LUMPUR – Rio 2016 mixed doubles silver medallist, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying’s challenge at the Hylo Open 2021 in Germany ended early yesterday as the duo suffered a shock first-round defeat at the hands of world number 43, Mikkel Mikkelsen-Rikke Soby of Denmark.
Mikkel-Rikke stunned fourth-seeded Peng Soon-Liu Ying 20-22, 21-15, 16-21, in a match that lasted 53 minutes.
However, professional mixed doubles duo, world number 13 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie eased past their first task as they eliminated Dutch pair Ruben Jillie-Cheryl Seinen 21-14, 21-15.
Soon Huat-Shevon will take on Niclas Nohr-Amalie Magellund of Denmark in the second round today.
Meanwhile, national young pair, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See defeated New Zealand’s Oliver Leydon-Davis-Anona Pak 21-15, 21-15 to book a tie against top seeds Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai in the next round.
In the meantime, Liew Daren had another tournament to forget as he was knocked out by Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong, 17-21, 20-22.
2021 All England Champion Lee Zii Jia will begin his campaign in Germany today by facing Spanish shuttler Pablo Abian.
